DNC, Day 2 Roundup

Hillary gave her speech at the DNC last night, and received rave reviews from baseball-metaphor-loving pundits, including Keith Olbermann ("a grand slam"), James Carville ("this is what a major-league fastball looks like"), and Bill Richardson ("She hit a huge home run, a 500-foot home run") (via HuffPo). You can try to write your own baseball metaphor at The Caucus--they're soliciting reader comments with the question, "Did Senator Clinton, wearing the sisterhood of the bright orange traveling pantsuits, deliver a speech that will endure? . . . Did you have a favorite line from her speech?" There's also an interactive video and transcript of the entire thing.

Daily Kos is liveblogging the convention and got some great quotes from speakers last night, including Kathleen Sebelius's "line of the century about McCain": "There's no place like home...or a home...or a home...or a home...or a home..." and Mark Warner: "In four months, we'll have an administration that actually believes in science." Gawker thinks Hillary's "No way, no how, no McCain" is the catchphrase of the election: "The Democrats need to stop coining memorable slogans every day, or they'll end up with a library of mindless partisan sayings and talking points, and might just win the election." Andrew Sullivan, on the other hand, was unimpressed: "[I]t was an average performance, not a slashing attack on the Bush-Cheney record, nor a rousing rallying cry for Obama, nor a very insightful analysis of the country's problems. . . . So far, only Michelle Obama has rescued this convention from being dreary and distracted." And the Washington Independent blog regrets that Clinton "did not go after Sen. John McCain for repeatedly using her in his recent campaign ads."

Most importantly, however, Wonkette goes through the DNC Schwag Bag and pronounces it a "Bunch O' Crap." The bag itself is "Just a blue sack with Coke and AT&T logos. Probably made in China by armless children orphaned in the Georgian war." One of the things in it is a "Piece of garbage you are supposed to plant in the dirt, to make a 'garbage plant.'"
