Media: Sarah Scarce, Midnight Sun Leaks, Vogue India Slammed
Looking to read the 160-page Sarah Palin biography, Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned Alaska's Political Establishment Upside Down? You may have to wait awhile--the book's publisher, Epicenter Press, sold all 3,000 hardcover copies in its warehouse by 10 AM (Pacific Daylight Time) on Friday and is using Ingram Publisher Services to print more on demand (via GalleyCat). For now, the book's Amazon page says it'll ship in three to six weeks, and the publisher's description begins like this: "Sarah Palin, the vice presidential pick for John McCain in 2008, is a former Wasilla High School basketball star, ex-beauty queen, and one-time journalist who wears a killer smile, designer glasses, and high heels.
Vogue India's August issue has sparked controversy for its fashion spread showing impoverished people wearing designer clothes. Vivre Magazine.com calls the photos "tacky" and "distasteful." Front of Book wonders how much they paid the models, saying hopefully, "Probably more than $1.25 a day, considering that American models make thousands of dollars for one photo shoot. So in essence, if Vogue India is creating more jobs and paying higher wages, they might actually be making a positive difference in the lives of India's average citizens." Jezebel says, "India has a tumultuous history of poverty, exploitation and colonialization, and a poor kid in a Fendi bib doesn't exactly help heal wounds. Maybe the real question is: Should Vogue India even exist?"
Stephenie Meyer has put Midnight Sun, the fourth/maybe last book in her mega-bestselling Twilight
series, on hold after a draft was somehow leaked on the Internet. "I'd
rather my fans not read this version of Midnight Sun," she writes on
her Web site.
"It was only an incomplete draft; the writing is messy and flawed and
full of mistakes. But how do I comment on this violation without
driving more people to look for the illegal posting? . . . I've decided
to make the draft available here (at the end of this post). This way,
my readers don't have to feel they have to make a sacrifice to stay
honest." BookDweeb thinks it's "a cautionary tale for fans. We may
never know who leaked the manuscript or exactly why, but it is ironic
that one person's zealousness to get their hands on Midnight Sun will
now make it so that millions never get a chance to read the entire
story. What a devastating loss for Meyer, her fans and for her story.
Now Edward's perspective will never be told."
Finally, Webwalker has created a list of the 10 Communications Objectives of Social Media. They are: generate awareness; drive trial; product launch; establish need/want; product/service comparison; positive association; form/change opinion; influence the influencers; drive action/traffic; and establish/regain trust. Chris Brogan says, "I'm thinking there's one missing to the tune of something like 'community good will' or the like, or whatever one might call it when you're not trying to sell, but instead are just proving that you're a contributing human."
