Parenting Blogs Spar on Palin

Following the announcement that Sarah Palin's 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, is five months pregnant and will have the baby and marry its father (via HuffPo), parenting bloggers began posting up a storm. "Few politicians have so conspicuous a juggle as [Palin]," writes WSJ's The Juggle, which reminded commenters to stick to "the work-and-family issues she has faced"--this is a loaded issue. "I just don't believe a VP or President could do a good job with a young baby. I don't even think I do a fantastic job at my mid-level internet work with an infant," writes UrbanMamas. Lisa at Lifelearning.org, a homeschooling site, unleashed the phrase "bad parent": "I am not saying she is a bad parent because her daughter is pregnant . . . I am saying she is a bad parent because she has chosen to throw herself into the spotlight dragging her family along. She needs to be with her kids right now and not on the political stumping grounds."

The Journey thinks "to put your child, your 17 year old child, in a position where they will be in the headlines for a mistake they made (and yes, I think getting pregnant at 17 is a mistake) . . . I think it's cruel." Others think Palin's working mom example is inspiring: "She is completely, unashamedly, unapologetically, a mother," posts Random Musings. "How wonderful to bring a dedication to mother-baby togetherness, such bold living out of Christian motherhood, to the nation's attention in such a powerful way." And White Trash Mom, an undecided voter who was quoted in a Palin article in the WSJ, put politics aside for a second, noting, "You might disagree with Sarah Palin on political issues but don't be too quick to judge or to mock the situation involving her daughter Bristol. As the parent of a teen, even in the early stages of the teen years, I am humbled enough to know the first rule of parenting a teen is 'NEVER SAY NEVER'."
