One Laptop Per Child: Give 1 Get 1 Is Back!
Today, Monday, November 17, marks the launch of One Laptop Per Child's second Give One/Get One (G1G1) program. You can purchase an XO laptop for yourself while at the same time donating one to a child in the developing world (via Slashgear). Actually two options are available: $199 simply donates an XO, or you get one and send one for $399. The full FAQ is here. jkOnTheRun says that last year's G1G1 "was a success last year in spite of lacking a major outlet for getting the orders in," and this year, with Amazon.com handling delivery, things should go even better. The Amazon
G1G1 Europe page is also up and running now, One Laptop Per Child News reports. J Gadgets notes that "several companies--Google and SWIFT being two examples--are pledging to meet and double their employees' donations." Gizmodo suggests "other things per child" to give to kids in developing countries, including velociraptors.
More seriously, last year LAPTOP Magazine donated 30 laptops to a village in Mali and documented the experience in a series of blog posts--photo gallery here, and all the posts here. Just Write Click has created an OLPC Laptop user's guide, available in a printed version on Lulu or as a downloadable PDF, and says, "My hope is that XO users around the world will get a book and pass it on." And So what can I do? gave and got a laptop last year and writes, "I just love bringing it to the library, coffeeshop, jury duty waiting room, or other public venue because people always ask questions about it and give me the opportunity to talk about the fantastic machine and organization. People are always so intrigued when I demonstrate my computer, but they're often a bit disappointed when I tell them that they can no longer order the machine. Well cheer up folks, now's your chance!" The devices will be shipped in 30 days--in plenty of time for the holidays.
