NFL Playoff Buzz; College #1 Contest Close

clip_image002 As the streaking Chargers head into their AFC semifinal game against the Steelers on Sunday, Chargers receiver Vincent Jackson has committed a pregame boo-boo, getting arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. "Excellent work, genius," says Shutdown Corner. "Maybe he was driving the Chargers bandwagon. You'd have to be drunk for that," quips Kissing Suzy Kolber. Yes, it's NFL postseason season, and fans are getting antsy. It's college football showdown week, too, with the Florida Gators and Oklahoma Sooners playing in the FedEx BCS National Championship Game Thursday. Simon on Sports calculates that "the Gators are suiting up a much more talented starting lineup than the Sooners." CTSSportsPicks says Florida is a four-point betting favorite and offers five reasons the Gators "will blow out Oklahoma."

In the NFL, previewing Sunday's Giants-Eagles game, Giants blog G-Men Headquarters says forget Eli Manning, Donovan McNabb. Derrick Ward, Brian Westbrook, Domenik Hixon and DeShaun Jackson--"this Sunday is all about [Giants RB] Brandon Jacobs. If he is healthy, the Giants can't be touched." Rival Iggles Blog fears that the Giants, coming off the bye week, have had two weeks of rest, and "Jacobs should be very, very fresh." But Bleed Eagles Green suggests the long break may leave the Giants rusty and vulnerable early: "The Eagles need to score early...must own the 1st quarter." In the other NFC game, Panthers fans are optimistic about playing the heavily unfavored Cardinals Saturday. "This weekend couldn't have turned out any better for the Carolina Panthers," roars Cat Scratch Reader. Cards blog Revenge of the Birds says it's sorry it didn't expect the so-called "the worst divisional winner ever" to win its playoff game last Saturday to advance to this weekend's Panthers game, and admits "Damn, it's good to be wrong!"

In the AFC, the Ravens may be underdogs against the Titans and lost to the Titans in an October game, but "this Ravens team is much better than they were in October," and rookie QB Joe Flacco keeps getting better, crows Ravens Roost. Despite Jackson's DUI, some Chargers fans at Bolts Blog are predicting victory over the Steelers, but apparently their win over the Colts last weekend was "enough to wash their minds of an 11-10 loss to the Steelers in Week 11," says Behind the Steel Curtain.

And in an apparent brain glitch outside of football, it seems Arizona baseball writer Corky Simpson has left Rickey Henderson off his Hall of Fame ballot. "If anyone wonders why baseball writers are often mocked, this is it," gripes The Big Lead. "Perhaps the greatest leadoff hitter in the history of baseball - snubbed....So what if he's an egocentric douche."
