First Dog: Labradoodle or Portuguese Water Dog?

clip_image002

It's official: The nominees for First Dog are a Portuguese Water Dog and a Labradoodle. Gents Canine Society predicts the Obamas will choose a labradoodle: "easier to pronounce and more all American sounding." Retrieverman points out that in his interview with George Stephanopoulos, Obama mistakenly called the Portuguese Water Dog a "Portuguese water hound"--"there is no such breed, of course"--and explains that "Senator Ted Kennedy has a brace of the Portguese water dogs, which might explain Obama's affinity for the breed." The Swamp likes both dog breeds: "We've seen the two of them at play in the local dog parks, and both the Doodles and Portuguese have boundless energy." Parentdish notes that "the Obamas will likely choose rescuing an animal rather than going through a breeder." Whatever the Obamas choose, one mystery remains: "While campaigning in Iowa in 2007, Mr. Obama had said that the goldendoodle was Malia's top choice," writes The Caucus. "There was no word from Mr. Obama on why the goldendoodle had withdrawn from consideration, though it seems a safe bet that, in this case, a federal investigation was not the cause."
