Blog Theories: Why Did Sarah Palin Resign?
Sarah Palin announced Friday that she is resigning mid-term as governor of Alaska. Take Part thinks the announcement was "meant to be buried by other news (read: Michael Jackson) and a holiday weekend," but now that everyone's back to work, of course bloggers are wondering what's going on behind the scenes. "The stories are leaning all over the map and rightfully so--because we don't know what the hell is going on," writes The Inquisitr. "It's not often a Governor just quits out of the blue and even less often do they do it for no apparent reason." "I suspect that Palin very much wants the public to discuss her reasons [for leaving]," writes Womanist Musings. "The more that she is a subject of conversation, the more she will appear as a legitimate possible choice." "If Sarah's departure is followed by the eruption of any scandal, no matter what it is, she is finished on the national political stage. Period," writes The Market Ticker. The Daily Beast has eleven resignation theories and The Hollywood Gossip has ten.
Pondering Penguin thinks “[h]er resignation makes no sense. Her whole reasoning about being a lame duck and not able to do as much as she could as a private citizen is nonsense.” Political Betting agrees: “A particularly strange argument advanced is the assertion that she can work at least as well towards her unspecified goals out of office as in it, free from the partisan bickering that comes with the job. That’s either untrue (the powers that come with high office are never irrelevant) or an admission of a complete failure in her leadership. Either way, it can’t be helpful to a future presidential bid.” Palin is working to quash rumors on her own Twitter page (Boing Boing notes she’s “gonna have to give up that [Twitter] handle”) but Wonkette thinks she just sounds crazier in the process: “Sarah Palin is now twatting on the twitter about how her Anchorage attorneys are going to SUE THE AMERICAN MEDIA, for saying ‘WTF’?”
