White House Battles: First Fox, Now a Car Site
Car website Edmunds.com recently released a report stating that the White House's Cash for Clunkers program actually "cost taxpayers $24,000 per vehicle sold." And now the White House is fighting back--on the official WH blog: "This is the latest of several critical 'analyses' of the Cash for Clunkers program from Edmunds.com, which appear designed to grab headlines and get coverage on cable TV. Like many of their previous attempts, this latest claim doesn't withstand even basic scrutiny." Autoblog says, "While we're not entirely sure C4C was a great idea, it's hard to argue that it spurred desperately needed economic activity." But the White House reaction is a dumb move, says The Business Insider: "It is an odd, and we'd say regrettable, pattern of this White House that it lets itself get dragged down into fights with specific media outlets." (Mediaite covers the White House's battle with Fox News--have they, possibly, reached a truce?)
Edmunds.com has now responded to the White House's post, writing, "With all respect to the White House, Edmunds.com thinks that instead of shooting the messenger, government officials should take heart from the core message of the analysis: the fundamentals of the auto marketplace are improving faster than the current sales numbers suggest."
