Google Buzz = Twitter Killer?
What's coming from Google? Something exciting and Twitter-killing, which will be announced in a press conference today. Anticipation is building fast. The Wall Street Journal announced yesterday that Google is adding a new feature to let Gmail users view media and status updates from their friends. "If Google is smart, these status updates will pour into and out of Facebook and Twitter..." says Silicon Alley Insider. "Otherwise, it's hard to see how this feature won't end up as another in a long line of Google products that tried, and failed, to beat popular services from Web rivals." (But Google will never connect to Facebook or Twitter, John Battelle's Searchblog claims.) "The intent is to keep people's attention centered on Google, by making Gmail, not Facebook, people's first stop online--and their default place to send and receive messages," explains Epicenter. Scobleizer lists several reasons why although Google's social networking initiatives (like Orkut) have failed in the past, this one might work--for example, "This time they built everything in house," "Employees on board," and "Twitter looks attackable."
Best Super Bowl Ads 2010
If you watch the Super Bowl for the ads, don't be embarrassed: "discussing--and dissecting--our favorite Super Bowl ads is almost as time-honored an American tradition as watching the game itself, except that it's more inclusive!" proclaims Mediaite. USA Today's Ad Meter ranks the most popular ads, based on viewer opinion. The #1 ad was by Snickers: "Betty (and Abe Vigoda) finished at the top with an AdMeter rating of 8.68," reports Lost Remote. "A close second was the Doritos dog 'shock collar' advertisement, with the house built of Bud Light coming in third." GEN WOW notes that "[l]ast year, Snickers faced scorn for an ad deemed as homophobic. This year, ageism helped them score top spot...The pitch: You're like a weak old person until you eat candy. Okay, so maybe it's not that ageist--the spot is fun and Betty White and Abe Vigoda are a hoot."
